Biography
Professor Osama Ismail Hassan Abdelbary is a distinguished academic in the field of sociology. He currently serves as a Professor of Sociology at Umm Al Quwain University in the United Arab Emirates. Previously, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Zagazig University in Egypt, appointed by presidential decree on May 21, 2023.
Dr. Osama earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with highest honors in 1995, followed by a Master’s degree in Sociology in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Sociology in 2000—all from the Faculty of Arts at Zagazig University. He received top academic honors for both his postgraduate and doctoral studies, along with recommendations for his theses to be published and circulated among other universities.
Throughout his academic career, he has held several key academic and administrative positions, including Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the Faculty of Arts, Zagazig University (2019–2023), Acting Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs (2020–2022), and Chair of the Sociology Department at Zagazig University (2018–2019). He also served as Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Sharjah (2014–2016), where he held various academic roles from 2008 to 2018. In addition, he has taught at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom and Al Jabal Al Gharbi University in Libya.
Dr. Osama has been an active member of numerous academic and scientific committees throughout the Arab world. He has served on promotion and award committees for prestigious national awards such as Egypt’s State Encouragement Award, the Abdul Hameed Shoman Award, and the UAE’s Ministry of Interior Award for Scientific Research. He has also served on promotion committees at King Abdulaziz University, Princess Nourah University, and several universities in Kuwait, Sudan, and Jordan.
He is also a member of editorial boards for respected academic journals including the University of Sharjah Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences, the Social Affairs Journal, and the International Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies.
His academic contributions include coordinating national academic programs in Egypt and participating in social policy and family strategy committees in both Dubai and Sharjah. He has also served as a consultant on social policy and sustainable development for the Sharjah Consultative Government Council, and as a member of various cultural and social councils in Egypt.
Dr. Osama has actively contributed to the development of academic institutions and the assurance of educational quality. From 2009 to 2018, he was involved in the reaccreditation of the undergraduate sociology program at the University of Sharjah. He also played a key role in obtaining final accreditation for the Master’s program in Applied Sociology and initial accreditation for the Ph.D. program in the same field in 2016 during his tenure as department chair.
He has served on numerous faculty councils, academic and supervisory committees, graduate studies committees, grant committees, and e-learning committees at both Zagazig University and the University of Sharjah. These contributions reflect his deep commitment to academic excellence, research integrity, and institutional development across borders.
