The native flora is one of the best natural-based solutions to combat desertification and drought, especially amid climate change. Thus, it is a necessity to cultivate and sustain the indigenous beauty of the region, by cultivating the native plants.
On the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (17 June), we are proud to highlight “The Native Plants Museum” as a real inspiring model based on Umm Al Quwain University to combat desertification and drought. The project has been selected as one of the top 100 initiatives with a sustainable impact in the national competition “Sustainable Impact Challenge 2025”, organized by Majra. The initiative was supported by the UAQU's Chancellor, and initiated and conceptualized by Dr. Suzan Shahin (Assistant Professor, College of Arts and Science). The first phase of the project has been completed, involving the landscaping of the university campus with native Emirati plants. Work is now underway on the second phase, which aims to enhance walking paths with green cover and educational signage featuring information about the native plants showcased in the museum. The project acts as a live museum for the UAE natural heritage. In the third phase, the project will launch seed collection campaigns from the native plants featured in the museum. These campaigns will provide an ideal opportunity for university students and the wider community to engage with the cultural heritage of Emirati flora, and contribute to its conservation and sustainability.
